ensure 用法：比較assure與insure

問：We must that the telegram arrives in time.A. secureB. ensureC. assureD. certify答案為B。但我不明白為什麼不能選C(assure) 。要知道，assure 也作“保證”解，而且也可以接that 受詞子句, 是不是？

答：從語意上說，ensure 用法和assure 都可譯作“向⋯⋯ 保證”、“擔保”。但是，ensure 用法是指“保證事情一定能做到”，而assure 是指“保證所說的是真的”。請比較下列實例：

I assure you (that) there’s no danger. 我向你擔保不會有危險。I can’t ensure that he will be there in time. 我不能保證他及時到達那裡。

從結構上看ensure 用法和assure 在接that 受詞子句時，前者不帶間接受詞，而後者必須帶間接受詞, 即assure sb. that ：

I can assure you that this feeling will soon pass… 我可以向你保證，這種感覺很快就會過去⋯⋯I assure you it is not only a quest ion of money. 我向你保證，這不僅僅是一個金錢的問題。

我敢保證，在你讀了上面的文字之後，你在做上面的試題時便會毫不猶豫地去選B(ensure) 。

ensure 用法2（ensure/insure）：

問：請簡析ensure 與insure。

答： ensure 的意思是：“保證”、“使肯定得到”：

This medicine will ensure you a good night’s sleep. 這藥物肯定會使你夜裡睡得很好。These factors must be adjusted rapidly to ensure maximum propulsive efficiency. 這些因素必須迅速加以調整以確保最大的推進效率。

insure 則總是與“保險”有關係：insure one’s life, property, insure against fire/death, accident ：

My house is insured against fire. 我的房子保了火險。2. They were advised to insure their luggage against theft. 有人建議他們給行李保被盜險。

但是美式英語有一種傾向，就是把ensure 也拼寫為insure.
